Dancing with the Monsoons: Welcoming Sawan 2022 with Spirit and Splendor

The month of Sawan, or Shravan, holds a significant place in the Hindu calendar. It is considered one of the most auspicious months for the followers of Hinduism, filled with numerous festivals, vratas, and rituals. In 2022, the Sawan month commences on July 13 and concludes on August 11, as per the North Indian Hindu Calendar. The dates may differ slightly as per the South Indian Hindu Calendar, which follows the Amavasyant Lunar Calendar.

This sacred month is dedicated to Lord Shiva, a powerful deity in the Hindu pantheon. Devotees offer prayers and perform rituals, including fasting, to seek his blessings for prosperity, peace, and fulfillment of desires. The Mondays of Sawan, known as Shravan Somwar, are particularly important. People observe fasts and visit Shiva temples to offer milk, water, and Bilva leaves to the Shivalinga.

One of the most culturally rich festivals celebrated during this month is Raksha Bandhan, a celebration of the bond between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters tie a protective thread, or Rakhi, around their brothers' wrists, praying for their well-being, while the brothers pledge to protect their sisters.

Another important festival during Sawan is the Hariyali Teej, a celebration of the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Predominantly observed by women, this festival involves fasting, singing, dancing, and swinging on beautifully decorated swings amidst lush green surroundings.

Each day in the month of Sawan is considered auspicious for spiritual growth and material gains. This is a time to seek divine blessings, perform good deeds, and immerse oneself in devotion and spirituality. Although the dates may vary year by year, the essence of Sawan remains constant, symbolizing faith, devotion, and the divine presence of Lord Shiva in our lives.
