In the vibrant tapestry of Hinduism, every day holds a special significance and every month is marked by sacred observances. Among these, Ekadashi holds a revered spot. Ekadashi, which literally translates to 'eleventh', is the eleventh lunar day (Tithi) of each of the two lunar phases which occur in a Hindu calendar month - the Shukla Paksha or the waxing phase and Krishna Paksha, the waning phase. For the month of October 2022, two Ekadashis, namely, Papankusha Ekadashi and Rama Ekadashi, fall on the 8th and 23rd respectively.
Papankusha Ekadashi, also known as Ashwina-Shukla Ekadashi, is a day devoted to Lord Padmanabha, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that observing a strict fast on this day and worshipping Lord Vishnu can absolve one of all sins. The rituals involve waking up early, taking a holy bath, and offering prayers to Lord Vishnu with offerings of tulsi leaves, fruits, and sweets. The devotees recite Vedic mantras and spend the day in contemplation of the divine.
The second Ekadashi of October 2022 is Rama Ekadashi, falling in the Krishna Paksha. This Ekadashi is considered one of the most significant among all 24 Ekadashis, and observing a fast on this day is believed to eliminate all past sins and negativity from one's life. Just like Papankusha Ekadashi, the rituals of Rama Ekadashi involve early rising, holy bath, and offering prayers to Lord Vishnu. Additionally, the devotees read the 'Vishnu Sahasranama'- the thousand names of Lord Vishnu.
Both these Ekadashis emphasize the spiritual upliftment of an individual through fasting, prayers, and introspection. It is believed that the fast helps to control the senses, purify the mind, and bring the individual closer to the divine.
