Embracing Light and Abundance: Celebrating Vishu 2023 in All its Grandeur
"Vishu 2023: Celebrate the Hindu New Year in Kerala marking the Sun's transit into Aries. Auspicious rituals, traditions, and feasts await."
As dawn breaks on 14th April 2023, the Hindu community across the globe will come together to celebrate 'Vishu' – the astrological New Year in the Indian state of Kerala. The festival, deeply rooted in the cultural ethos of Kerala, is a joyous celebration that marks the transition of the Sun into Meda Raasi (the first solar month). Vishu signifies the beginning of new hopes and aspirations, a fresh start to the agricultural season, and the blossoming of nature.
A vital aspect of Vishu that adds a unique charm to its celebration is the 'Vishukkani', which literally translates to 'the first thing seen on the day of Vishu after waking up'. The Kani comprises a special setting of gold ornaments, yellow Konna flowers, fruits, vegetables, rice, grains, holy texts, and a mirror. The arrangements are made in the family puja room, and the eldest member of the family lights up the lamp at dawn and then blindfolds each member to the room to behold the blessed sight. The belief is that an auspicious Kani at the start of the year ensures a year full of prosperity and good fortune.
Feasting forms an integral part of Vishu, with the traditional 'Vishu Sadhya' - a grand meal served on a banana leaf with its array of at least 13 to 15 dishes, rounding off with the 'Vishu Katta', a special delicacy made of raw rice, coconut milk, and jaggery. The grandeur of the meal reflects the spirit of abundance and prosperity that Vishu symbolizes.
Another delightful tradition of Vishu is the 'Vishukaineetam'. The elders in the family distribute coins or notes to the young ones, symbolizing the act of sharing wealth and blessings. The custom not only adds to the festive spirit but also imparts valuable lessons of generosity and gratitude among the younger generation.
Vishu is not just a festival, it's a celebration of life, nature, and prosperity. It's a time for families to come together, for old friends to reconnect, and for blessings to be shared. It's a day when every moment is filled with joy, love, and warmth, and every ritual is a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that we carry within us. As we eagerly await Vishu 2023, let's remember to carry forward the values it signifies, embracing the promise of a prospering new beginning.
