Embracing the Divine Journey: Celebrating Ekadashi in August 2022
Explore the significance, rituals, and astrological influence of Ekadashi fasting days in August 2022 as per Hinduism.
As we step into August 2022, we are graced with the observance of two significant Ekadashis - Kamika Ekadashi and Pavitropana Ekadashi. Ekadashi is a revered day in the Hindu calendar, observed twice a month on the eleventh day of each lunar fortnight. This day is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and devout Hindus observe a rigorous fast to seek His divine blessings.
Kamika Ekadashi, the first Ekadashi of August 2022, falls on the 1st of the month. This auspicious day holds great spiritual significance, as it is believed that sincere fasting and prayers on this day can absolve one's sins, including those from past lives. It is also believed that the merit earned from observing a strict fast on Kamika Ekadashi equals the merit earned from performing an Ashwamedha Yajna, one of the most exalted Vedic rituals.
The second Ekadashi in August is Pavitropana Ekadashi, occurring on the 15th of the month. This Ekadashi is synonymous with purity; the name 'Pavitropana' itself translates to 'purification'. Observing the Pavitropana Ekadashi fast is believed to purify all sins and negativity. Devotees also perform the Pavitra ceremony, creating a holy thread which is worn, symbolizing purification from misconduct and sin. The day is concluded with the auspicious ritual of 'Parana', where devotees break their fasts and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu.
In both Ekadashis, the fasting period extends from sunrise on Ekadashi till sunrise the following day, known as 'Dwadashi'. The fast involves complete abstinence from food and water, known as 'Nirjala Vrat'. However, those who cannot undertake this strict fast may choose to consume fruits, nuts, and milk products. Alongside fasting, devotees engage in meditation, singing devotional songs, reading scriptures, and visiting Vishnu temples to seek His divine blessings.
The observance of Ekadashi in August 2022 serves as a divine pathway to seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu, cleanse our souls, and progress on our spiritual journey. While it requires physical restraint, the spiritual rewards are profound, offering inner peace, serenity, and a deeper connection with the divine.
