Kartik Purnima is also considered as the birthday of Lord Vishnu's first incarnation, Matsya. This day also marks the end of the four-month auspicious period for Jains known as Chaturmas; hence, they celebrate it as a day of enlightenment or the "Jain Diwali".

To celebrate Kartik Purnima, devotees light oil lamps and float them in water bodies after sunset. This sight of thousands of lamps twinkling on the water surface creates a mesmerising spectacle. Devotees also visit temples, offer prayers, and participate in religious discussions and cultural programs. In Odisha, the day is celebrated with the famous Boita Bandana ritual, where people float miniature boats remembering the maritime glory of their ancestors. In parts of North India, a grand fair known as the Pushkar Mela is held.
