The Sun God, or Surya, is venerated on Ratha Saptami, which falls on the seventh day (Saptami) in the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu month Magha.

According to Hindu mythology, Surya was born on this day to sage Kasyapa and his wife Aditi, hence, this day is celebrated as the birthday of Surya. The day is symbolically represented as the Sun God Surya turning his Ratha (Chariot) drawn by seven horses towards the northern hemisphere, in a north-easterly direction. This day also signifies the transition of the Sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn, marking the start of the much-awaited spring season.

Ratha Saptami is marked by several rituals and rites. Devotees wake up early in the morning, take a holy bath, often in a river or a water body, while praying to the Sun God. They then offer Arghya (water) to the Sun God while reciting Surya Mantras. Homes are decorated, special dishes are prepared, and charity is given. It's a tradition to draw a Ratha (chariot) on the ground, which is considered auspicious and invites positive energies into the house.
