The festival's name comes from two words – 'Karwa', meaning an earthen pot, and 'Chauth', which refers to the fourth day of the Hindu lunar calendar's Krishna Paksha. Karwa Chauth is celebrated exactly nine days before the festival of Diwali.
On this day, married women observe a fast from sunrise to moonrise for their husband's well-being and longevity. The fast is broken only after sighting and offering prayers to the moon. The day begins with a pre-dawn meal called 'Sargi,' which is prepared by the mother-in-law and comprises of fruits, sweets, and other delicacies. Women then begin their fast, refraining from even consuming water throughout the day.
In the evening, women gather to perform a 'puja' and narrate the story of Karwa Chauth. They dress up in beautiful traditional attire, often adorning their hands with henna and wearing their wedding jewelry. A 'thaali' or plate containing flowers, sweets, an earthen lamp, and a decorated 'Karwa' filled with water is prepared for the puja. The significance of the Karwa is to remind the women that just as the earthen pot preserves water, their prayers and devotion will safeguard their husband's life.
As the moon rises, women offer prayers to the moon, seeking its blessings for their husband's well-being. They view the moon through a sieve or a piece of cloth, and then their husband's face, signifying that just as the moon's light enlightens the dark night, their husband's love illuminates their life. The husbands then help their wives break the fast by offering them a sip of water and a bite of food.
With changing times, Karwa Chauth is no longer limited to just married women. It has become a celebration of love and commitment, with many husbands also choosing to fast alongside their wives as a symbol of their love. The festival has adapted to modern times while still upholding the essence of devotion and togetherness, making Karwa Chauth 2022 a much-anticipated event for couples and families alike.
