India has a rich history of powerful women who were pioneers in their own right. A prominent name among them is Rani Chennamma, the Queen of Kittur, in Karnataka. Born in Kakati, a small village in the Belgaum district of Karnataka in 1778, Rani Chennamma was trained in horse riding, sword fighting, and archery from a very young age. She was a brave leader with a heart full of patriotism.

Rani Chennamma ascended to the throne of Kittur, a princely state in Karnataka, after the demise of her husband, Raja Mallasarja and the untimely death of her son. At a time when women leaders were not common, Rani Chennamma showcased extraordinary bravery and leadership skills that made her a legend. She led an armed rebellion against the British East India Company in 1824, in defiance of the Doctrine of Lapse, an annexation policy applied by the British in India.

The valiant queen did not bow down to the British rule and refused to give her land to the East India Company. She declared war when the British tried to annex her territory. The first round of war ended unfavorably for the British, with Rani Chennamma showing exemplary courage and resourcefulness. This marked the first instance of resistance against the British rule in India, a whole generation before the First War of Indian Independence in 1857. Despite being captured and imprisoned, Rani Chennamma became a symbol of resistance against British colonisation.
