Annamayya, also known as Annamacharya, was a 15th-century Hindu saint and the earliest known Indian musician to compose songs called sankirtanas in praise of the god Venkateswara, a form of Vishnu. He is widely regarded as the Pada-kavita Pitaamaha or the grand patriarch of song-writing in Telugu language, with a prolific output of over 32,000 devotional compositions, which are still widely sung by millions in India.
Annacharya was born in a Brahmin family in the village of Tallapaka in present-day Andhra Pradesh, India. From an early age, he exhibited a deep inclination towards spirituality and devotion, which led him to the holy hill of Tirumala, the abode of Lord Venkateswara, at age 16. It is said that during his Samadhi on the hill, Lord Venkateswara granted him spiritual insight and profound devotional fervor, which inspired him to compose thousands of songs in praise of the Lord. Each of his compositions, known as a Sankeertanam, is set to Carnatic music and is replete with the essence of Vedanta philosophy.

They encapsulate his deep love for God, his understanding of the human condition, and his profound compassion for all creatures.
