Prepping for Purification: The Sacred Observance of Ekadashi in September 2022

Ekadashi holds a very special place in the Hindu calendar and is celebrated with great devotion and fervor by devout Hindus worldwide. In September 2022, we observe two Ekadashis - Parsva Parivartini Ekadashi (also known as Vamana Ekadashi) on September 6th and Indira Ekadashi on September 20th. Both these Ekadashis have their specific significance and rituals associated with them.

Parsva Parivartini Ekadashi is celebrated during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) of Bhadrapada month. On this day, devotees observe fasting and perform special pujas. It is believed that Lord Vishnu, who is in his cosmic sleep, turns on His side on this day, hence the name 'Parivartini'. Observing a fast on this day is believed to eradicate the negative effects of past sins and brings prosperity and happiness.

On the other hand, Indira Ekadashi falls during the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) of Ashwin month. This Ekadashi is particularly dedicated to honoring our ancestors (Pitru). It is believed that by observing a fast on this day and performing 'Pitru Tarpan', a ritual to honor one's ancestors, one can bring peace to their souls. This day holds great importance for those who wish to express gratitude and respect for their departed ancestors.

The beauty of Ekadashi lies in its simplicity. The austerity of fasting combined with prayer and devotion makes it a spiritually enriching experience. These days provide a wonderful opportunity to disconnect from worldly distractions and focus on our spiritual growth. Each Ekadashi, with its unique significance, reminds us of our essential duty to uphold Dharma and to remember our divine connection with the Supreme.
