Veer Savarkar, born as Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, was a remarkable figure who left an indelible mark on India's struggle for independence. Born on 28th May 1883 in Bhagur, near Nashik, Savarkar was deeply influenced by the nationalist ideology from a very young age. Swami Vivekananda's teachings had a profound impact on him, igniting in him a deep desire to serve his motherland. The 1857 rebellion became a source of inspiration for him, and he began organizing revolutionary activities against British rule while studying in India and later in London.
Savarkar's contribution to literature cannot be overlooked. He was a prolific writer and poet whose works stirred the nationalistic sentiments of the people. His collection of poems was significant in arousing patriotic feelings among the masses. He was also the first poet in the world who was deprived of pen and paper in a jail, yet he composed poems and then memorized ten thousand lines of them for years till he was out of jail.
His book, The First War of Independence, gave recognition to the 1857 uprising as the first war of Indian independence and shattered the British claim that it was merely a 'sepoy mutiny'.
