According to these texts, Sati, the first wife of Lord Shiva, immolated herself as a protest against her father Daksha's disrespect towards Shiva. Anguished by Sati's death, Shiva performed the Tandava, the celestial dance of destruction, carrying Sati's body. To calm him down and prevent the destruction of the universe, Lord Vishnu dismembered Sati's body, the places where the pieces fell came to be known as Shakti Peethas.
